Tinnitus and complex hearing complaints

Tinnitus remains a major unresolved healthcare problem. China has specialised TCM schools for tinnitus and hearing disorders, but the current evidence is not yet strong enough to claim a proven unique treatment.

Evidence status: Research candidate; evidence still insufficient

What is the medical problem?

Chronic tinnitus can seriously affect sleep, concentration, mood and quality of life. Often there is no simple anatomical cause or curative standard treatment.

Which options are being considered?

  • complete ENT and audiological assessment
  • assessment of hearing loss, somatic components and medication
  • tinnitus rehabilitation and counselling
  • specialised acupuncture protocols
  • treatment of sleep and stress
  • neuromodulation only where evidence and indication justify it

What could a treatment pathway look like?

The first step is to exclude treatable causes such as asymmetric hearing loss, vascular abnormalities or medication effects. Only then can an integrated treatment programme be considered using objective audiology and validated tinnitus questionnaires.

What do we know about effectiveness?

Positive studies exist for acupuncture in tinnitus, but results are inconsistent and methodological quality is insufficient to claim a proven superior Chinese treatment. For now, it therefore belongs in a research-oriented and selected-treatment category.

Important selection considerations

Pulsatile tinnitus, sudden hearing loss, neurological symptoms or unilateral complaints may have an urgent medical cause and require standard diagnostic assessment first.

Medical selection before travel

The options described are not a guarantee of treatment. Availability and suitability depend on diagnosis, indication, evidence level, individual risks and assessment by the treating medical team. Experimental care is identified as such.

Would you like to know whether a pathway could be medically appropriate?

A treatment journey always begins with an assessment of the diagnosis, medical history, previous treatments, medication, risks and the specific treatment objective.
