Intensive medical rehabilitation

For patients who receive insufficient treatment intensity in Europe, a temporary daily rehabilitation programme with physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and specialist supervision may offer a practical advantage.

Evidence status: Conventional evidence-based care

What is the medical problem?

After neurological conditions, trauma, major surgery or prolonged illness, recovery depends strongly on treatment intensity, repetition and multidisciplinary collaboration. Waiting times and limited therapy hours can slow the recovery process.

Which options are being considered?

  • daily physiotherapy
  • occupational therapy
  • gait and balance training
  • arm and hand function training
  • speech and swallowing rehabilitation
  • cognitive rehabilitation
  • hydrotherapy where appropriate
  • hyperbaric oxygen only for recognised indications
  • adjunctive TCM methods when there is a rational medical indication

What could a treatment pathway look like?

Before departure, physical tolerance and rehabilitation goals are defined. At the treatment centre, a multidisciplinary assessment is followed by a weekly schedule with daily therapy. Progress is measured periodically and translated at the end into a follow-up plan for home.

What do we know about effectiveness?

Multidisciplinary rehabilitation is evidence-based for many neurological and orthopaedic indications. The distinguishing factor is not that rehabilitation exists only in China, but that selected centres may organise treatment intensity, integration and frequency differently.

Important selection considerations

Rehabilitation must match the patient’s cardiac, neurological and overall physical tolerance. More treatment hours are not automatically better; intensity should be built up individually.

Medical selection before travel

The options described are not a guarantee of treatment. Availability and suitability depend on diagnosis, indication, evidence level, individual risks and assessment by the treating medical team. Experimental care is identified as such.

Would you like to know whether a pathway could be medically appropriate?

A treatment journey always begins with an assessment of the diagnosis, medical history, previous treatments, medication, risks and the specific treatment objective.
