Fibroids and adenomyosis can cause heavy menstruation, anaemia, pressure symptoms, chronic pain and fertility problems. Surgery or hormonal treatment is not desired or suitable for every patient.
What could a treatment pathway look like?
Before treatment, it is assessed whether the lesion is technically accessible and whether bowel, nerves, scars or other anatomical factors increase risk. After HIFU, symptoms and volume reduction are followed clinically and with imaging.
What do we know about effectiveness?
HIFU is an established medical technology with substantial clinical experience in fibroids and adenomyosis. The technique also exists outside China, but China has exceptionally extensive treatment experience in this field. Suitability and long-term outcomes must be assessed for each patient.
Important selection considerations
HIFU is not suitable for every location or lesion size. Possible complications include skin injury, nerve irritation and damage to surrounding structures. Fertility wishes must be discussed explicitly with the gynaecologist.
